66 million years ago
When the world burned, the fern came back first.
The sky fell. Forests burned, the light went out, and most of life on Earth disappeared. In the rock laid down just after, there is a mark: a sudden surge of fern spores. While everything else was gone, the fern was already back.
Act I · Awe

Today
You are standing on the newest layer.
It is still being laid down. Concrete, plastic and ash from burned fuel are settling into it now, and one day it will be read like the rest.
What will your layer say?

After
Everything after grew on rebuilt ground.
Forests, mammals, flowers, grasslands and, in the last thin sliver, us. All of it stands on what came back first.

Years, at least, ferns held the ground
Ferns held the ground for at least 30,000 years.Just above the impact, the rock fills with fern spores. While almost everything else was gone, the fern was already back, rebuilding the ground.

The impact layer
The sky fell.
- Fire.
- Acid rain.
- Darkness.
- Cold.
An asteroid struck what is now Mexico. In some regions, four out of five plant species disappeared. What is left in the rock is a band of clay, rich in iridium.
the impact
Before
A world that assumed it would continue.
Warm seas. Tall forests. It had lasted so long that lasting felt like a law. Nothing in the rock says it saw the end coming.
Every organization has a layer like this.

The door to Fern Fitzgerald
Take the two clocks to your board.
The Board Climate Risk Brief puts what you have committed and what you are exposed to on one page, so the silence between them ends in the boardroom, not after it.
Fern Fitzgerald directs programs of this kind and credentials the voices in them.
